Recognize South Dakota Farmers and Ranchers by Celebrating Beef Month in May

May 1, 2009 -- SIOUX FALLS, SD – As the weather warms, South Dakotans are eagerly anticipating a season of backyard grilling and family barbecues. And, for many families, hamburgers, steaks or other beef cuts will be at the center of their plates.

Beef plays a key role in South Dakota consumers’ diets, and beef production also plays an important role in the state’s economy.  To recognize the efforts of the state’s 16,000 beef producers, May has been designated as Beef Month in South Dakota.

“South Dakota’s beef producers work hard every day to deliver nutritious, safe, and affordable beef products to dinner tables and restaurants across the state,” said Steve Dick, Executive Director of Ag United.  “In addition, they are committed to providing top-notch care for their animals and protecting our state’s natural resources.”

South Dakota ranks eighth among U.S. states in the total number of cattle and calves, with more than 3.6 million cattle in the state according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture 2007 Ag Census.  Cattle production also boosts local economies by providing markets for locally-produced grain, supporting area businesses and contributing to county and state tax revenues.

Ag United was developed through a collaboration of farm organizations that support livestock production and development and includes the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association, the South Dakota Corn Growers Association, South Dakota Farm Bureau, South Dakota Pork Producers Council and the South Dakota Soybean Association. The President of the organization is Volga farmer, Scott VanderWal; the Secretary is Astoria farmer, Dave Iverson.
