South Dakota Farm Organizations Donating Milk to Rapid City Food Banks in Response to PETA Protest

November 25, 2009 - Sioux Falls, SD -- The activist organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) protested South Dakota's dairy industry on Wednesday by dumping gallons of milk into a trash can by a person dressed in a cow outfit.

While PETA claims cows in the dairy industry are mistreated, Executive Director of Ag United For South Dakota, Steve Dick says that is not true.  "South Dakota dairy families care about their cows and take excellent care of their animals.  Cows produce only if they are well cared for, so producers are going to do everything they can to keep them happy."

While the animal rights extremist group simulated the dumping of gallons of milk into a trash can, many farm organizations have stepped up to with donations of milk to local food banks in the Rapid City area.

To protest PETA's irresponsible actions, Ag United is accepting donations of gallons of milk from the public.  The organization will then match the donations - gallon for gallon - and provide them to Rapid City food banks with the help of the Community Food Banks of South Dakota.

Dairy foods are the most abundant source of calcium in the American food supply and have many vitamins to keep your body healthy.  To learn more about how dairy products lead to a healthy diet check out the Midwest Dairy Association web site at:  www.midwestdairy.com.
