Pilot Travel Centers Asked to Reconsider Affiliation with the Humane Society of the United States

February 26, 2010 -- SIOUX FALLS, SD - Recently Pilot Travel Centers, a truck stop chain expanding across the country, was announced as a corporate sponsor of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).  HSUS advertises as though they run shelters; however they are not affiliated with any local animal shelters.

"HSUS is a lobbying organization who has a vegan agenda.  They have gone to extreme measures to restrict and, in some states eliminate livestock production," said Steve Dick, Executive Director of Ag United for South Dakota.

In 2008 HSUS collected $86 million in donations, only $450,000 actually went to organizations that provided hands-on care to animals.    While $20 million was spent on campaigns, legislation, and litigation; $24 million was spent on fundraising and $30.9 million was spent on salaries, wages, and other employee compensation.

"While making a donation to help animals is a worthy cause, we just wish Pilot Travel Centers and others would make their donations to local shelters where the funds will actually help animals in need," added Dick.

Ag United for South Dakota has sent letters to the three South Dakota Pilot Travel Centers locations urging them to discuss this recent sponsorship with other Pilot Travel Centers.

The letter sent to Pilot Travel Centers can be read at www.agunited.org.  To learn more about the agenda of the HSUS visit www.humanewatch.org.
