Open house and ribbon cutting for Davison County business Sept 30

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Agriculture United for South Dakota is pleased to announce they will be participating in a ribbon cutting and open house at the Brad and Peggy Greenway family’s new 2,400 head swine finishing barn on Saturday, September 30, 2006.

“The Greenway’s new hog barn highlights the opportunity that South Dakota presents for families feeding livestock,” said Ag United board member and Astoria farmer, Dave Iverson. “With the record land prices we have seen in South Dakota the past few years, many farm families are looking at the opportunities livestock feeding provides as a way to expand their family business.”

The ribbon cutting and open house will be held on Saturday, September 30, 2006 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Greenway’s barn located at 25113 401st Ave, Mitchell. From I-90, Exit 325 (Betts Road Exit): 2.5 miles North, 2 miles West and 1 mile North.

Pork loin sandwiches will be served during the open house by the Davison County Pork Producers. In addition, there will be a short program at 12:45 pm. Representatives of Ethan Coop Lumber, and MDS Manufacturing in Parkston, local companies involved with the project, will be a part of the program.

Up to now, the Greenway’s have operated a farrow-to-finish operation with Brad’s father. Along with their new hog finishing operation, Brad and Peggy have a cow-calf herd and also raise corn, soybeans, wheat and hay. Brad is currently serving his second term as president of the South Dakota Pork Producers Council. The Greenway’s have two children; Mandi, a junior at Augustana College, and Brent, a senior at Mount Vernon High School.

South Dakota’s hog producers raise over 2.3 million hogs annually that consume more than 25 million bushels of corn and 6.5 million bushels of soybeans. The pork industry accounts for an estimated 8,369 jobs in South Dakota including farm families, processors and supporting services. In addition, the hogs add over $500 million each year to the state’s gross product.
