Ag United to host livestock seminar in Freeman June 15

SIOUX FALLS, SD– Agriculture United for South Dakota will be hosting a seminar on Thursday, June 15 at Papa’s in Freeman, for South Dakota farmers interested in starting or expanding a beef or swine facility.

The program will cover all aspects of constructing and operating a state-permitted livestock facility. Topics to be addressed include a review of state regulations, county zoning ordinances, siting livestock operations, fostering neighbor relations, construction of hog barns and monoslope barns, odor control, management and utilization of nutrients, and more.

“With many farmers concerned about the rising cost of land and inputs such as fertilizer, this is an opportunity for farmers to explore livestock production as another option for expanding their business,” said Scott VanderWal, Volga farmer and Ag United president. “This seminar will provide information on every step of the process.”

Speakers will include representatives from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and SDSU, as well as engineers, builders, manure management service providers and feed specialists. Area livestock producers also will be available to answer questions about hog barns and monoslope barns.

The program runs from 10:00 am–2:30 pm, and lunch will be provided. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. For more information and to register, contact Ag United at (605) 336-3622 or info@agunited.org.
